Project Description: The York County Heritage Rail Trail crosses approximately 30 bridges from the Maryland/Pennsylvania border into the City of York. To accommodate the trail, several bridges required new superstructures adjacent to the existing railroad superstructures. In all cases, considerable cost savings were realized by utilizing the existing substructures with only minor modifications. Re-use of the existing substructures also expedited the process of obtaining permits from the PA Department of Environmental protection by eliminating the need to work in the underlying stream channels. The larger bridges (up to 5 spans) are found on the northern half of the trail. Some of these bridges were constructed with prestressed concrete box beams, and others with steel I-beams. All of the new bridge superstructures were built with reinforced concrete decks to provide a durable and safe surface. The bridges are lined with relatively tall PA DOT standard aluminum bicycle railings to provide for the safe passage of pedestrians, horse riders, and bicyclists of all ages.
